21 June 2024
Joe Burns
Cyber Security Expert / Certified Ethical Hacker
Registration from: 11:45am
Lunch: 12:30pm
NCBC Council Member, Joe Burns of Reformed IT, was our guest speaker in June.
Event Roundup
Joe took us into the mind of a hacker, and it was fascinating. First, he showed us how easy it is to find an ‘open’ computer and steal its data to potentially publish it on the dark web. We could be innocently working on a train or sat in an office window and not realising that a ‘shoulder surfer’ is filming us entering our passwords.
Once the hackers have the data, they are using it against the owners to request ransoms or they will publish it online, and it’s only got easier with the introduction of AI! Now, robots can find holes and vulnerabilities and break in for the hackers.
So… what did Joe advise us?
- Choose a great password or, even better, use a password vault that auto generates complex passwords and saves them securely for you
- Don’t use passwords at all. Use a multi-factor authenticator (MFA), such as Microsoft 365, instead. Set all accounts using MFA.

During his talk, Joe will provide real insights and experience from the mind of a hacker. In order to stop them, we need to think like them.
